Nomination Process
Each year District teachers for Grades 3-5 nominate students who they believe meet the Fund’s criteria for high academic achievement. Students in grades 6-11 are also screened and encouraged to apply for Fund stipends. All of the students (whether nominated or who apply on their own) must complete an application and provide information about an academic or artistic summer program they are interested in attending. They are also required to write an essay supporting their interest in that program. The teachers and the Fund Board (consisting of a mix of Distenfeld family members, District faculty, faculty alumni, parents and/or community members) meet annually to review the nominations, applications and the summer programs requested. All members and officers of the Fund Board serve as volunteers with no remuneration.
The summer programs must be artistic or academic in nature (not sports related) that will enhance the students’ academic curriculum.
While requesting a stipend for a summer program for which you will receive college credit will not disqualify you from Distenfeld award consideration, please know that this will be taken into account when the Board considers any stipend award.
The Board awards approximately 10-15 stipends to District students each year. The individual stipend amounts vary each year according to the (1) cost of the program; (2) the amount the student’s family can contribute toward the total cost; and (3) the total amount the Fund is able to distribute. However, as a guideline in past years stipend amounts have ranged from $50.00 to $600.00.
While originally the stipends were distributed from Fund interest only, the current economic conditions have necessitated that the Fund use some of its principal. Ideally, the Fund Board would like to increase the annual stipend distribution total since the cost of the programs is increasing.
